Much like other revolutions, there were both positive and negative impacts or consequences that the American Revolution brought to the newly formed United States.
The Positive ConsequencesFirstly, The drafting of The Constitution brought total independence and freedom to the American people from British rule. Without these strong laws, rights and guidelines from The Constitution, America will still need to be dependent on the British. Secondly, the previous government in Colonial America was heavily influenced by the church. This highly effected the way the government was run. However once America became independent, new rules were created and it was decided the church had to be separated from the government. Also the rules in The Constitution state that the country must maintain democratic. ("The American Revolution-The Causes and Consequences," n.d.) Thirdly, the American people started to comprehend that slavery was not a great thing. It removed the right of a human or a person to live in freedom and during this period of time. Also African Americans became more well educated and started to demand for freedom and equal rights. Fourthly, the women also started to demand for their rights as they became more educated and became more involved in the spirit of nationalism. Finally, the Independence of America not only allowed the American people to have a say in their own problems but increased American Nationalism. This national sprit developed during the revolution as the 13 Colonies united and fought against the loyalists, hence the Revolutionary War. |
The Negative ConsequencesFollowing the end of the war, the United States went into economic depression. The Congress was unable to pay for the major debts that they owed from war veterans, foreign governments and other individuals. To make matters worse, the states charged the citizens high property taxes in order to pay back the war debt. This act caused a lack of confidence in the newly established government.
